The two week bedtime reset
One page. Fourteen nights. Cross them off as you go.
First day of school: Target wake time:
Target bedtime: Tonight is night of 14.
Count backwards from the first day of school and start tonight.
The countdown
- Night 1415 minutes earlier. Bedtime and wake time both. Waking her earlier is what actually moves the clock.
- Night 13Hold at 15 minutes earlier. Do not add anything new tonight.
- Night 12Hold. If tonight was hard, hold one more night before the next step.
- Night 11Hold. Last night at this step.
- Night 1030 minutes earlier. Start dimming lights one hour before bed.
- Night 9Hold at 30. Lights dimmed again. Same order of events every night from here.
- Night 8Hold at 30. Check the room at bedtime: is it actually dark enough?
- Night 745 minutes earlier. Screens off 60 minutes before bed. This is the step most families skip and most regret.
- Night 6Hold at 45. Screens off again. Expect pushback tonight, not tomorrow.
- Night 5Hold at 45. Protect the wake time even if bedtime slipped.
- Night 460 to 90 minutes earlier. Nearly there.
- Night 3Hold. Do one full school morning rehearsal: clothes, breakfast, shoes, out the door.
- Night 2Hold. Lay out clothes tonight so tomorrow has one less decision in it.
- Night 1Target bedtime. Change nothing. No lecture about tomorrow.
If it stalls, it is almost always one of these two.
1. It is still light outside. In early August the sun is up past 8pm in much of the US. A room that reads as daytime delays melatonin no matter how consistent you are. Darkness is a physical fix for a physical problem.
2. She does not know when it is morning. A 5:30am riser undoes the whole schedule, because the wake time is the anchor. A child who cannot read a clock has no way to tell 5:30 from 6:45.
Already out of time? If school starts in five days, do not attempt the full fourteen. Move in 30 minute steps instead of 15, accept that the first school week will be rough, and protect the wake time above everything else. A consistent wake time drags bedtime into place within a week or two even if you started late.
