The back to school skip list

One page. Seven things that can wait, what would change each answer, and the short list worth buying now.

First day of school:   Revisit this list on:
Buy the required list now. Put everything else here and revisit after two weeks of real school.

Skip for now

  1. 1. A second backpack, or an upgrade to last year's. Backpack regret is usually a style opinion formed in July and revised by October. Buy it later if: the zipper actually fails, or the school specifies a size the current one is not.
  2. 2. Bulk supplies before you see the classroom list. Teachers ask for specific counts, colours, or communal supplies. A July warehouse pack is often six of the wrong thing. Buy it later if: the list names a quantity you genuinely do not have.
  3. 3. A planner your child has not agreed to use. A planner is a habit, not a purchase. If last year's was empty by October, a nicer one will be too. Buy it later if: the school requires a specific one, or your child asks for it unprompted.
  4. 4. New lunch gear before you know the schedule. Containers depend on whether there is a microwave, how long lunch actually is, and whether the bag fits a cubby. Buy it later if: the current container leaks, or the schedule requires insulation you do not own.
  5. 5. A “first-day” outfit for a growing child. August growth is not predictable. First-day clothes are frequently short by the class picture. Buy it later if: nothing currently fits, which is a real need and not a list item.
  6. 6. Anything sold as an organisation system before the chaos is real. Locker shelves, desk caddies, drawer inserts. They solve a shape of mess you have not met yet. Buy it later if: you have watched the actual mess for two weeks and it has a shape.
  7. 7. Electronics the school has not asked for. Many districts issue devices, headphones, or calculators. Buying ahead often duplicates something that arrives free in week one. Buy it later if: the school confirms in writing that it does not supply it.

Worth buying now

The three-question skip test, for anything not listed above. Ask in order. If the answer is no, stop.

1. Is it on the required list, broken, or deadline-bound? If no, it waits.

2. Do I know the real constraint? Size, schedule, teacher requirement, storage. If no, it waits.

3. Has my child used the last one? If no, a nicer version will not change that.

Three no's is not deprivation. It is two weeks of information you do not have yet. Nothing on the optional list gets meaningfully harder to buy in September, and most of it gets cheaper.
